Abstract
Electron transfer from cesium atoms to mass selected produces a metastable electronic state of H3, the rotationless level of the state. The resulting photoabsorption spectrum of metastable H3 is atomiclike and extremely simple. It permits the detailed exploration of the electronic structure of triatomic hydrogen. Two types of experiment are carried out involving photoionization and photodissociation techniques in a fast beam of these H3 molecules.
