Abstract

ε-GaSe Is a lamellar crystal for which the c axis is orthogonal to the natural platelets. In a configuration where the light polarization is perpendicular to the c axis, electronic transitions are partly allowed due to spin orbit coupling between singlet and triplet states. In this material, the flatness of the band structure implies for the exciton a binding energy of the order of 20 meV, which makes it optically observable at room temperature.1,2 The exciton ground state at 2.002 eV is well suited for near resonant excitation by femtosecond pulses at 1.99 eV.
