Optical spectroscopy of electronic excitations in semiconductors microstructures

Abstract

Advances in semiconductor technology have led to the fabrication of artificial microstructures that have characteristic lengths comparable to interatomic distances. These structures have remarkable new properties. Some of the most Interesting arise from the reduction in dimensionality when electron motion is confined to distances comparable to the de Broglie wavelength. In typical semiconductors new quantum phenomena become apparent for characteristic lengths that are smaller than 1000 A. Two-dimensional systems occur in the heterojunctions of two semiconductors, Extensive research has been carried out in single heterojunctions, quantum well heterostructures, and haterojunction superlattices.
