Asymmetric spectral broadening of picosecond pulses in multimode optical fibers

Abstract

Large size multimode fibers are commonly used for effective signal collection and wideband transmission over short distances in medical and semiconductor diagnosis systems. Nonlinear and linear pulse propagation in multimode optical fibers needs to be investigated. The spectral and temporal broadening of 8-ps laser pulses at 527 nm with different intensities propagating through multimode optical fibers of different lengths with a core diameter of 100 μm was measured and analyzed. The results are compared to the spectral broadening generated in single-mode optical fibers. A typical spectrum is shown in Fig. 1.
