Broadband frequency upconversion in a single-mode optical fiber

Abstract

We report observation of very strong broadband frequency upconversion in an optical fiber by intense laser pulses at 1054 nm. The pump pulses are generated from a Nd:phosphate glass cw mode-locked oscillator-regenerative amplifier system.1 The oscillator produces pulses of ~11 ps at 1054 nm at a 100-MHz repetition rate. The regenerative amplifier subsequently amplifies the pulse energy to ~16 μJ at a repetition rate of 500 Hz. The pulse width of amplified pulses is around 13 ps. These high energy picosecond pulses are then coupled into a single-mode optical fiber ~16 m long.
