Abstract
We present a fibre-optic gas sensor based on surface plasmon resonance excitation using thin films of silver (Ag) and tin oxide (SnO2) for detection of ammonia gas. The sensing probe was prepared by depositing thin films of Ag and SnO2 using thermal evaporation technique on small portion of an unclad core of an optical fibre. The sensor response for various concentrations (10ppm to 70ppm) of ammonia gas was determined using wavelength interrogation technique. We found that resonance wavelength shows a red shift with increase in the concentration of ammonia gas. The probe made using optical fibre has many advantages like remote sensing, continuous online monitoring, miniaturisation and many more. The sensor results predicted that NH3 gas sensing using SnO2/Ag thin films is feasible.
