Abstract

Optical nonreciprocal devices such as isolators and circulators are fabricated on silicon waveguide platforms. Magneto-optical materials play an essential role in obtaining optical nonreciprocity. The authors have developed a direct bonding technique that enables integration of magneto-optical garnet on a silicon waveguide. Using this technique, optical isolators and circulators have been demonstrated with an isolation > 30 dB in a 1550 nm wavelength range.
