Abstract

Meningioma is a frequent benign extracerebral tumor originating from arachnoid cells. Meningiomas do not infiltrate the brain but may invade the arachnoid and pia causing brain odema. Optimal treatment is complete resection. Usually, the brain-tumor interface is easy to identify, but resection may be challenging in such invading meningiomas. Incomplete tumor resection causes tumor recurrence, especially in aggressive forms of meningiomas. Our team develops an optical tool, to help the surgeon to resect the tumor completely, by providing him multiple information about the tumor tissue, its limits and the underlying brain tissue. In this work, our goal is to find the scattering and the absorption coefficient of different meningioma and healthy tissues using the integrating sphere technique. Spectral measurement was done also on 405 nm and 375 nm excitation wavelength to observe the fluorescence emission of the tissues examined and to link the spectral information with the values of scattering and absorption coefficient. This a complementary study of another one which discriminate the grade 1 and grade 2 meningioma with the biphotonic microscopy imaging technique.
