Intra-operative Brain Tumor Imaging

Not Accessible

Abstract

The accumulation of fluorescent protoporphyrin IX following oral delivery of 5-aminolevulinic acid proved highly specific for malignant glioma. Fluorescence imaging by surgical microscopes delineates tumor from normal brain during surgical resection. This approach enables a significant increase of cases with “safe gross total resection”, associated with longer progression free survival. Limitations and possible improvements are discussed.
