Abstract
Solar-pumped lasers have been realized by the natural sunlight excitation using an optical system incorporating an off-axis parabolic mirror to achieve a high concentrating ratio(10,626 Suns). Nd/Cr:YAG transparent ceramics were adopted as a gain medium for micro-rod laser(1×1×5mm3). Nd doped ZBLAN fluoride glass was adopted for double clad fiber laser of 7.5m. Stable laser operation for more than one our was achieved for both the media, even though they were equipped with no active cooling systems. The slope efficiencies were 5.8% and 6.6%, respectively. The total efficiencies were also 4.4% and 1.76%. Since the laser around 1.0μm fits the wavelength of the maximum energy conversion efficiency over 40% for a monochromatic light of high quality Si solar cells, this combination can make a promising novel solar-energy conversion system.
