Physical Thickness and Optical Depth of Stratocumulus from Space-Borne Lidar, A Moment-Based Diffusion Method

Abstract

Previously proposed retrievals of stratus opacity and/or thickness from satellite-based lidar call for either absolute calibration or a multiple field-of-view (FOV) capability. The new method relies only on the shape of the returned pulse, no need for calibration. However, it requires a FOV wide enough to capture all significant orders of scattering photons that can spread to as much as 0.5 km from the beam.
