Abstract

The new Advanced TIROS Operational Vertical Sounder (ATOVS) was launched on May 13, 1998. The ATOVS include die 19 channel High resolution InfraRed Sounder (HIRS) which has flown on NOAA satellites since 1978 and two new microwave sounders - the Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit (AMSU) - A and -B.
