The Benefits of Wavelength Interchange in WDM Rings

Abstract

In this work we quantify the improvement in blocking performance from the use of wavelength interchange in WDM Rings and their interconnection. We introduce a metric called the fairness ratio which measures the variation in blocking of the longest path connections compared to the shortest path connections. We show that the use of A- interchange in WDM rings can significantly improve (by factors of 100 to 10000) the fairness in wavelength assignment. More importantly, we found that for larger interconnected WDM rings this improvement can be achieved by including A-interchange capability in just 10% – 20% of the nodes in the network. We present two analytical models, a more complex overflow model and a simpler asymptotic model, for calculating the blocking performance of WDM rings that have no wavelength interchange capability but use the “maximum reuse” algorithm for wavelength assignment. We show that the overflow model is accurate when compared to simulations and that the simple asymptotic model gives surprisingly reasonable results.
