Abstract

The power sources and the detector which are reliable, economical and compatible with the fiber, are required in optical fiber transmission systems. In order to realize above requirements practically, a fiber mounted and hermetically sealed GaAlAs double heterostructure(DH) laser, a GaAlAs LED packaged with a fiber and a silicon avalanche photodiode(APD) with a fiber have been developed. We describe the structures, the fabrication techniques and the characteristics of these devices.
