Abstract

We study the modulation instability induced temporal fluctuation of the optical pulses in optical fiber sensing systems. In the presence of MI, the output light power shows a property of overall stability and internal fluctuation. When MI occurs, the relative intensity fluctuation of the central frequency light (RIFC) increases with the input power. The simulation results show that the RIFC is attributed to the ASE noise. The power fluctuation induced by MI presents another noise source in the optical fiber sensing systems.
