Abstract

This paper presents a novel dynamic micro-displacement measuring technique by use of hetero-core fiber optics for industrial applications such as structural health monitoring and fault diagnosis. A proposed sensor consisted of a hetero-core optical fiber and an Ag- mirrored end so as to directly convert micro-displacement into the macro-bending on the heterocore sensory portion. A series of experiments indicated that the sensor has a high linearity and sensitivity to displacement ranging from 7.18 × 10−3 dB/μm to 1.29 × 10−2 dB/μm by modulating the length of fiber beam, and detect micro-displacement vibration with a frequency up to 500 Hz with an accuracy of 5 %.
