Abstract

Intrinsic Fabry-Perot optical fiber sensors were embedded in the 20x20x150cm cement concrete structures. The sensors were attached to the reinforcing steel and electric strain gauges were attached near optical fiber sensors for comparison. Then the cement concrete mixture were applied. After hardening specimens one month, they were tested with 4-point bending method by universal testing machine. Strains were measured and recorded by optical fiber sensors and strain gauges. Output data from fiber sensor showed good linearity to the strain data from the strain gauges. In conclusion, the optical fiber sensors can be used as sensing elements of health monitoring systems for cement concrete structure including bridges.
