ENVIRONMENTAL ULTRA-VIOLET RADIATION MONITORING DURING SOLAR ECLIPSE USING OPTICAL FIBER SENSOR

Abstract

A remote sensing technique for the detection and continuous monitoring of environmental ultra-violet radiation using optical fiber has been described which makes use of cladding fluorescence phenomenon. Here the cladding of optical fiber is doped with UV-sensitive fluorescent materials. The probe measures approximately 1.5 mm. in thickness with variable length. The observations carried out indicate that this sensor can be employed to measure UV-radiation present in the surroundings. The measurements were also carried out to study the variation of uv-radiations during total solar eclipse on October 24, 1995 in the path of totality at a place near New Delhi, India.
