Abstract

This paper outlines an optical current transducer (OCT) with a bulk type Faraday sensor and its applications for fault location and metering. An OCT with Bi12SiO20 (BSO) single crystals satisfied the target performance requirement as current measuring equipment for power systems and demonstrated maintained performance at some power utilities in Japan and in the US. More than 1000 OCTs, especially in Japan, are in service for the fault location at substations as of January 1996.
