Abstract

Low-cost optical subscriber systems and effective operation are indispensable for constructing and maintaining greatly expanded optical fiber loops. An automatic remote monitoring system is essential for reducing maintenance costs and improving service reliability in optical subscriber loops. NTT has already developed such a system which is called AURORA (automatic optical fiber operations support system). This paper presents outlines of AURORA and optical fiber sensors for detecting faults in a fiber and sensing water in cable joints, and B-OTDR (Brillouin optical-fiber time domain reflectometer) for sensing strain distribution in a fiber.
