Abstract

Sensor heads based on a mechanical resonator which provide a frequency output have been investigated for a number of years [1]. At present, particular attention is given in our laboratory to micromachined silicon sensors in conjunction with optical fibre techniques for powering and interrogating the resonators [2]. There is always some potential difficulty associated with the coupling between fibre and sensor, and the aim of the new technique presented here is to make use of the optical fibre itself as a mechanical resonator.
