Phase Modulation in All-Fibre Ring Resonator Sensor

Abstract

Summary: The optical fibre ring resonator offers the potential for high sensitivity sensors [1], for example in rotation [2] and acoustic sensing [3]. For gyroscope applications it is necessary to bias the resonator at resonance and the control loop often involves applying a high frequency (KHz) phase modulation to the ring. Hydrophones are required to detect signals into the KHz region. To analyse such systems under dynamic loop phase variations, it is normally assumed that the 'static' intensity/phase response is maintained. The resonator is however a storage device and the output intensity against phase response relies upon the amplitude addition of waves which have large relative time delays. Modulations which substantially change the phase during these time delays alter the resonator response. This effect manifests as a 'ringing' in the output intensity.
