Abstract
Coherent optical detection is a promising technique to increase sensitivity of optical sensors. In a coherent optical detection system coupled to conventional single-mode fiber, its performance is degraded by the fluctuation of the state-of-polarization (SOP) at the fiber exit. There are two techniques to compensate the fluctuation, polarization control and polarization diversity (1,2,3). To date, studies have been performed mainly on the former technique from the view point of either manual or automatic control (4,5). However, if the polarization control is to be automatic, configuration of the system becomes rather complicated not only in its electric part but also in its optic part.
