Abstract
A number of approaches to the problem of optical means of sensing temperature have been made [1]. In this presentation an inexpensive "point sensor" to measure temperature using the temperature sensitive absorption properties of a material is discribed. Previous work by the authors [2] demonstrated the use of the luminescent properties of a fluorescent element alone as a temperature sensor. Herein this emission is used as a "reference channel" in conjunction with an absorption technique. In this latter case the transmission of the transducing material changes with temperature. Kyuma et al [3] used the temperature dependent shift in the absorption edge of the semiconductor material GaAs when addressed by light of wavelengths 0.88 µm and 1.3 µm.
