Abstract
Polarizers are essential components for optical sensors and coherent optical communication. Fibre based polarizers are advantageous compared to integrated optic versions because of low insertion loss, high performance, ease of manufacture and connection to fibres. So far fibre polarizers are realized either by grinding and polishing a bent fibre close to the fibre core, comprising the subsequent deposition of a dielectric buffet and a metal layer [1] or by coiling a birefringent fibre [2]. Of these solutions the metal cladded polarizer is most interesting since it makes use of a standard single-mode fibre design and has a high differential attenuation of polarization [1].
