Abstract
We report here an example of fibre optic interferometric technique, applied to the measurement of hydrogen partial pressure. The primary sensing element in this case is a palladium wire attached to a monomode optical fibre. The palladium absorbs hydrogen from its environment, and so changes its physical dimensions. Because the palladium is bonded to the fibre, strains result which are communicated to the fibre core. The hydrogen concentration may hence be determined from the phase retardance of a fibre guided optical beam. This phase is measured interferometrically, and in these experiments was converted to an electrical signal by using a pseudo-heterodyne processing technique.
