Abstract
Before the end of this decade optical fiber sensors will have been established as viable alternatives to conventional sensors (or transducers). These new systems can be based on multimode or monomode optical fibers; the fiber may simply be used to transfer an input beam to and from some form of conventional optical sensor, or the fiber may form both the transmission medium and sensor itself. This tutorial reviews recent developments in this rapidly growing field and describes in some detail sensor systems that are now well established.
