Microbending Pressure and Displacement Sensor

Abstract

Conventional microbending sensors press the fiber between two grooved plates.1-4 The sensor needs an extremely accurate mechanical setup with low frictional forces to obtain reproducible results.2 With a novel sensor arrangement the mechanical requirements are reduced, and the possible sensitivity to some extent is higher than with conventional sensors.1,2,4 The sensor consists of a circular plate and a short cylindrical tube. Both parts have six equally spaced eyelet bolts as shown in Fig. 1. The fiber is put through the eyelets which are alternatively fixed near the edge of the plate and the inner wall of the tube. Curvature and transmission of the fiber are changed by a small displacement of the plate.
