Abstract

This paper outlines the process of designing a logical topology in a multi-layer communication (MLC) network with protection against pre-determined classes of failures. It starts with a long-term prediction of future traffic which is used as the input to the network design. The network model is evaluating a combination of key metrics including, but not limited to, latency, cost, capacity and availability. Over time, Facebook communication networks get larger and more complex, which is reflected in their models. Performance and scalability become a serious challenge. To avoid processing times to increase beyond the acceptable time limits. we apply various known and new techniques including ones based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Mathematical Programming (MP).
