Abstract
Today’s optical access network technologies will run out of capacity in 4–5 years assuming the continuing exponential increases in peak bandwidth demand. This paper discusses the next generation of IEEE optical access, the 100 Gb/s Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON), capable of reaching bit rates of 100 Gb/s.
