Mechanism of Optical Losses in Bismuth-doped Silica Fibers

Abstract

Background optical losses in Bi:SiO2 glass and fibers fabricated and heat-treated in different redox conditions are studied. It is shown that these losses are mainly due to the absorption by metallic bismuth nanoparticles in glass.
