Polarization-Dependent Loss Induced Penalties in PDM-QPSK Coherent Optical Communication Systems

Abstract

We evaluate PDL-induced penalties in PDM-QPSK coherent systems with both lumped model and distributed model. We find the lumped model significantly over-estimates PDL penalties and PDM coherent systems can tolerate more PDL than single-polarization systems.
