Timing-Jitter in High Bit-Rate WDM communication Systems due to PMD-Nonlinearity interaction

Abstract

We show that the interaction of polarization-mode-dispersion and cross-phase-modulation in 10 and 40 Gbit/s WDM systems results in a significant timing-jitter, even in the absence of a PMD compensator. An acceptable PMD level can generate unacceptable jitter in WDM systems.
