On Optimal Decision Thresholds for Soft-Decision Error Correction Decoding in Fiberoptic Communication Systems

Abstract

We propose a practical way for selecting multiple decision thresholds maximizing mutual information. We show that when soft-decision error correction performance approaches Shannon limit, optimal thresholds converge to the ones maximizing mutual information.
