Abstract

We demonstrate the use of polarization alternation to dramatically improve performance in 42.7-Gb/s WDM transmission. Six channels are transmitted through ten 200-km (39-dB loss) standard-single-mode-fiber spans with amplification provided solely by erbium- doped fiber amplifiers.
