Experimental Observation of Local Birefringence and Axis Rotation in Spun Fibers on a Centimetric Scale

Abstract

We have measured the evolution of local birefringence along spun fiber samples, with a centimeter resolution scale. Experimental results confirm that the spinning-induced rotation of local birefringence axes reduces the effective fiber birefringence As polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) of transmission links has become the ultimate limit in high bit-rate optical communication systems, highly-performing fibers need the PMD level to be minimized.
