Quantum Limit of Direct-Detection Receivers: Duobinary vs. IMDD

Abstract

We demonstrate that the quantum limit of direct-detection receivers using duobinary transmission can exceed that of IMDD by 0.91 dB and we show that a practical optical duobinary system implementation can closely approach such performance.
