Spectral Efficiency of Coded Phase Modulation for High-Speed Fiber Optic Communication

Abstract

The spectral efficiencies of optical modulation and detection schemes are computed using information-theoretic techniques. The results quantify by how much phase-shift-keying can outperform direct-detection on-off keying when these modulations are used in conjunction with forward error control.
