Higher-Order-Mode Dispersion Compensation for Broadband Dispersion and Non-linearity Management in Transmission Systems

Abstract

Long-distance, high-speed transmission over broad bandwidths requires careful management of dispersion and non-linear distortions of the transmitted optical signal. While the optimal dispersion map for a transmission link may depend on several factors such as the transmission format, pulse width etc, as a general rule the dispersion accumulated in the transmission fiber must almost fully be compensated at each amplifier node for the entire spectral range of interest. The condition for broadband dispersion-compensation is satisfied by a dispersion-compensating module (DCM) that has a relative dispersion slope value (RDS = dispersion slope/dispersion) that is identical to that of the transmission fiber.
