Supercontinuum Multi-carrier Source for WDM Systems

Abstract

To realize flexible and robust photonic networks, it is essential to manage and control the optical frequency resource in the 1.5 µm region. Frequency management includes generating over one hundred optical carriers (modes) on ITU grids with well-controlled spacing for WDM networks.1 Supercontinuum (SC) generation is an effective way of obtaining such well-managed optical carriers; the input optical pulse spectrum is dramatically broadened while coherency is maintained.2–4 Some of the advantages of using SC for optical carrier generation are the fixed channel (mode) spacing with the accuracy of the employed microwave oscillator (–Hz), and its super-broadened spectra, a stream of more than 100 channels can be generated.5,6
