A 40 Gb/s eye monitor and its application to adaptive PMD compensation

Abstract

Growth of traffic in data transmission system leads to increasing needs for an efficient use of fiber infrastructure. Both, the increase of transmission rate per channel and the increase of number of WDM channels are limited by fiber characteristics, the performance of components and commercial aspects. 40 Gb/s DWDM transmission over long distances was demonstrated successful, but the application of this channel rate is limited for many installed fibers by its PMD. For fibers with not negligible PMD the transmission requires compensation of this impairment, successful compensation increases the PMD limit. Adaptive compensation schemes require fast and sensitive feedback signals due to the statistical origin.1 For PMD compensation DOP is a very attractive feedback signal especially at highest data rates because of data-rate independence. The DOP signal gives information about the overall optical signal not only at decision time. Eye monitoring has been demonstrated a very sensitive feedback signal giving information especially at decision time. Successful optical and electrical PMD compensation using fast eye monitoring has been demonstrated at 10 Gb/s.2,3,4 In this paper we report on a new eye monitor concept for 40 Gb/s operation and its application to adaptive optical PMD compensation in comparison to the DOP signal.
