Abstract
In recent years, the wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) transmission technology has exhibited a dramatically rapid increase in the transmission capacity up to multi-Tbit/s for the longhaul networks. Both reducing the WDM channel spacing (dense WDM) and expanding the signal wavelength bands have enabled this capacity increase. The WDM technology is now expanding its applications, not only in the longhaul networks, but also in the metro networks.
