Abstract
The dramatic increase of the internet traffic pushes networks to higher bit-rates and to optical switching. High speed optical signal processing is a key challenge to be solved for implementing all-optical networks. In this context all-optical 3R regeneration, where degraded optical data signals are Re-amplified, Re-timed and Re-shaped1 is of prime importance. The main functions in such a 3R regenerator are the clock recovery, a synchronised optical pulse source, 2 and the decision element, a digitally switching device. Semiconductor based solutions are preferable due to their potential for cost effective fabrication and for compact assembly on a Si motherboard. Regarding this, multi-section DFB lasers appear as very promising candidates. In this paper an overview on schemes, functionalities and applications of multi-section DFB lasers for all-optical signal processing will be given.
