Abstract

The recent rapid spread of multimedia communication has led to an urgent need for even higher capacity transmission in dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) systems. Arrayed-waveguide gratings (AWGs) founded on silica-based planar lightwave circuit (PLC) technology play a key role as practical multi/demultiplexers in high-channel-count DWDM systems with a large transmission capacity.1 To meet the growing demand, we have already realized a large-scale AWG with as many as 400 channels.2 However, the optical performance of AWGs tends to worsen as their scale is increased, because accumulated crosstalk increases in proportion to channel number.
