Abstract

The rapid growth of traffic volume in optical telecommunications using wavelength division multiplexing requires various kinds of optical amplifiers. For metropolitan area networks, low cost and compact amplifiers are desired. Er-doped optical planar waveguide amplifier is a leading candidate for such requirement.1,2 Besides cost and compactness, amplifying bandwidth, low loss connection to SiO2 fibers, chemical durability and mechanical strength are also important factors. We have previously demonstrated short-length and broadband amplification properties of Bi2O3-based Er-doped fibers (Bi-EDF)3 and fusion spliceable Bi-EDF to SiO2 fibers.4 We also report on its high chemical durability and mechanical property.3 Therefore, Bi2O3-based glass is good materials not only for fibers but also for waveguides. In this paper, we present Bi2O3-based Er-doped waveguides (Bi-EDW) fabricated by sputtering and photolithog-raphy technology.
