Stimulated Brillouin Scattering in Raman-Amplified Dispersion Compensating Fibers

Abstract

As the demand for longer reach between regeneration in a transmission system grows, more attention has been concentrated on developing all-Raman systems1 that use Raman amplification in the dispersion compensating fibers (DCFs) in addition to distributed Raman gain in the transmission fibers. When the incident power into the DCF reaches a certain minimum known as stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) threshold, a backward propagating Stokes wave that carries part of the input energy is generated. SBS in un-pumped DCFs has been studied elsewhere.2 In this paper we study Raman-pumped fibers and show that Raman amplification in DCFs can impose even more stringent power requirements since it drastically reduces the SBS threshold.
