Abstract

Measuring optical waveforms is very important for evaluating the quality of ultrahigh-speed optical time-division multiplexed (OTDM) transmission systems, and they can be measured with very high temporal resolution by an optical sampling method using an optical nonlinear effect.1–10 Quasi-phase-matched (QPM) frequency conversion in a periodically poled LiNbO3 (PPLN) crystal was recently used for optical sampling owing to its high conversion efficiency, 6–9 and we reported an optical sampling system that was based on sum-frequency generation (SFG) and had a conversion efficiency of 4.3 × 10−3
