Abstract

Photonic Crystal Fibers (PCFs) are currently a topic of great interest because of their unconventional properties with respect to traditional step index fibers based on total internal reflection.1 Guidance in PCFs is due to the multiple interference by a wavelength-scale periodic arrangement of air holes in a silica background material with a central defect forming the core. Several kind of PCFs, with different lattice geometries and hole dimensions, have been proposed and fabricated, reporting remarkable properties as for example single mode operation over wide wavelength ranges, large spectral interval of anomalous dispersion or high dispersion values for signal compensation.2–4
