Abstract

Pump lasers operating near 980 nm are key components in erbium doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA’s). To date, modules with fiber-coupled power in the range 150–250 mW are widely available commercially. The power requirements for pump lasers are increasing, however, due to increasing channel density in DWDM networks. Several groups have presented results demonstrating operation of single mode modules exhibiting fiber-coupled power in the 0.5 W range,1,2 but such high power modules are not yet widely available commercially. Numerous challenges must be overcome in order to realize commercially viable devices. One of the key barriers to achieving this goal is the elimination of the “kink,” which is manifested as a sudden change in the slope efficiency as drive current is increased. Another major factor for high power single mode devices is the high power density at the facets, and the role that this increased power density may play in the device reliability.
