Abstract

The need for constant signal amplification over ever-increasing signal channel counts has become critical to the continued development of DWDM systems. Optical amplification in the communication bands is typically achieved with erbium doped fiber optic amplifiers pumped by diode lasers. In the case of 980 nm pumps the absorption band is relatively narrow which puts stringent demands on the performance of the laser.
